Prepare for the Unpredictable Pacific Northwest Winter

As we approach the Pacific Northwest winter, the rain is coming down and the temperatures are dropping. Snow flurries are always a possibility this time of the year, even in the relatively mild Seattle area.

Before you head out in your car during this season, it’s important for you to be prepared for a sudden deterioration in the weather. Make sure to check the weather conditions where your final destination is.

The nearest forest service and the Washington Department of Transportation both post frequent updates on the conditions of roads and bridges around the state. It may be lightly raining where you are but higher elevations may be getting hit with snow, freezing rain, or heavy fog. This can mean very treacherous driving conditions.

If your vehicle doesn’t have four-wheel drive, it’s imperative that you carry approved traction devices with you, especially if you’re heading over one of the mountain passes. The weather can change drastically and you don’t want to get stranded along the side of a busy highway!

Don’t Rely on Your Cellphone

Make sure to take your phone with you but don’t rely on it for calling or GPS locations. Some remote areas will not have service, so if you need to call for help or confirm your location you may not get reception in that area. To be safe, always carry a paper map and a flashlight with you. And make sure it has fresh batteries!

If you’re going on a trip, make sure to let someone know where you’re going and when you intend to be back. Doing this will help others notify the police and have rescue crews sent out quickly if you happen to get stranded or hurt.

Before you go, make sure you have plenty of gasoline, your windshield wiper fluid is filled up, and you have traction devices, just in case. Don’t go off your planned route unless you’re certain of the way. Many travelers have been stranded after heading down a road that eventually dead-ends and they get stuck. With no reception, they are suddenly in trouble.

Pack an Emergency Kit

If you plan on heading over a mountain pass, you should consider bringing a survival kit in the trunk of your car. These are simple items and may not be necessary. But, if something happens and you get stranded, this kit could save your life! The kit should include a flashlight with fresh batteries, water, non-perishable food items, a cellphone charger, warm clothing and a blanket, and a battery-powered radio. Waiting for help to arrive is a lot easier when you aren’t cold and hungry!

Have Your Vehicle Inspected

Before you take a long trip in inclement weather, it’s important to make sure the vehicle you will be taking is reliable and maintained properly. Things that you don’t worry about in the summer months can cause problems if you need them and they’re not adequate.

• Windshield washer fluid should be filled
• Brakes inspected and pads replaced if worn
• Tires should have good tread on them and have adequate pressure
• Check antifreeze levels and have the radiator coolant replaced
• Make sure your battery is strong and can hold a charge
• Make sure your car insurance is up-to-date
• Have emergency roadside assistance in case of a breakdown

Winterizing your car can help you prepare for the harsh Pacific Northwest winter. Schedule a routine inspection, pack an emergency kit in your car, and know how to handle the most common winter emergencies.

You will be prepared for whatever the Washington winter sends your way.
