Winterize Your Home Now for Colder Weather

With autumn here, the temperatures will soon start dropping. We would like to share easy tasks you can do to winterize your home. It’s a good idea to do a little at a time while the weather is still decent and not try to accomplish it all at once in the pouring rain!

Some Winterization Chores

Pack Away The Air Conditioner – If you use a seasonal air conditioning unit, then now is the time to pack it up for winter! Make sure to spend a few extra minutes cleaning all the filters and coils well. It will keep the unit in great shape and it will last much longer.

Winterize External Plumbing Systems – It’s much better to prepare for freezing temperatures before it’s freezing! Winterize your home and all exposed outdoor faucets and you’ll avoid the trouble when there is snow or ice on the ground.

Check Your Carbon Monoxide Detector – This is an important one! October is a great time to check your carbon monoxide detector to make sure it is performing well. Change the batteries, test it, and replace older units.

Check Your Smoke Detectors – It’s a good idea to change the batteries in your smoke detectors this fall. With people indoors and using the fireplace, there’s an increased chance of a fire. Don’t wait until your smoke detectors start “chirping” in the middle of the night because of a low battery!

Clean Out Your Gutters – The trees will be shedding leaves all over in the coming weeks and many of them will find their way into your gutters and downspouts. Combine all these leaves — and pine needles — with plenty of rain and the result can be badly clogged gutters. By cleaning gutters out now of any debris, and periodically checking them, you can keep the downspouts cleared and the gutters from overflowing and spilling rainwater and leaves down your siding and onto the ground.

Clean Up For Halloween – Trick-or-treating can be a liability hazard! Clean up any loose tree limbs, fill holes in the yard, and remove any fire hazard Halloween decorations before kids are running to your door.
