Individuals & Families

Individual health insurance inWashington.

Self-employed, between jobs, or your employer does not offer a plan. We help you compare Washington Healthplanfinder options and understand what the subsidy actually means for your premium.

The Basics

Washington runs its own marketplace.

Individual health plans in this state are bought through Washington Healthplanfinder, the state-based exchange, rather than the federal site. Plans are grouped into metal tiers, and premium tax credits are based on household income and size.

The common mistake is shopping on premium alone. A bronze plan with a low monthly cost and a high deductible can easily cost more across a year than a silver plan, depending on how much care you actually use. And if you qualify for cost-sharing reductions, those only apply to silver plans — which changes the maths entirely.

The other thing worth checking before you enrol is the network. Plan networks in Puget Sound vary considerably, and the major systems are not all in every plan.

  • We compare total annual cost, not just premium
  • We check your doctors against each plan network
  • We check your prescriptions against the formulary

  • Any planned procedures this year
  • What you pay and use now, if insured
What To Compare

How to read the options

Most Critical

Provider Network

Confirm your primary care physician, specialists and preferred hospital are in network before enrolling. This varies more between Puget Sound plans than people expect.

Total Annual Cost

Premium plus deductible plus expected copays, not premium alone. A cheap monthly figure often costs more over twelve months.

Drug Formulary

Check your medications and which tier they sit on. Formularies change annually and can swing your out-of-pocket cost sharply.

Metal Tiers

Bronze, silver, gold and platinum describe how costs are split between you and the plan — not quality of care.

Subsidies

Premium tax credits depend on household income and size. Cost-sharing reductions, if you qualify, apply only to silver plans.

Enrollment Windows

Open enrollment runs on a set annual schedule. Losing coverage, moving, marriage or a new baby can open a special enrollment period outside it.

Individual Health FAQs

Where do I buy individual health insurance in Washington?
Through Washington Healthplanfinder, the state-based marketplace. Washington runs its own exchange rather than using the federal site, and premium tax credits are applied there.
Does working with an advisor cost extra?
No. The premium is the same whether you enrol on your own or through a licensed advisor. What you get is someone checking your doctors, your prescriptions and the total annual cost rather than sorting by monthly premium.
I missed open enrollment. Can I still get covered?
Possibly. Certain life events — losing job-based coverage, moving, marriage, divorce, or having a child — open a special enrollment period. Tell us what changed and when, because these windows are time-limited.
Is a bronze plan actually cheaper?
Only if you use very little care. The low premium comes with a high deductible, and for someone with regular prescriptions or appointments a silver plan often costs less across the year. If you qualify for cost-sharing reductions, silver becomes more favourable again.
I am turning 65. Does this still apply?
At 65 most people move to Medicare, and the timing matters. See our Medicare enrollment guidance, or call us — the decision is different if you are still working and covered.
