Business Insurance

Commercial auto insurancein Washington.

If a vehicle earns money for your business, your personal auto policy probably will not respond to a claim. Sav-On writes commercial auto for work trucks, vans and fleets across South King County.

The Basics

The gap most business owners do not know they have.

Personal auto policies typically exclude business use. That means a claim during a delivery, a job-site run or a service call can be denied outright, on a vehicle you have insured and paid premiums on for years.

It catches out sole traders most often. The truck is in your name, you drive it to work sites, and the policy says personal use. The first time you find out is after an accident, which is the worst possible moment.

We are on the Pacific Highway corridor between SeaTac and the Port of Tacoma, so a lot of what we write is vehicles that run I-5, SR-99 and SR-509 every day. Limits and hired-and-non-owned coverage matter more here than a national template would suggest.

  • Owned, hired and non-owned vehicles
  • Liability, collision and comprehensive on work vehicles
  • Uninsured motorist, which matters on urban King County roads
  • Employees driving their own cars for work
  • Tools and equipment carried in the vehicle, scheduled separately

Who usually needs it:

  • Contractors and trades
  • Delivery and courier businesses
  • Landscaping and cleaning crews
  • Mobile service and repair
  • Anyone with a company vehicle

Commercial Auto FAQs

I only use my truck for work sometimes. Do I still need commercial auto?
Usually yes. The test is not how often, it is whether the vehicle is being used for business when the accident happens. If you haul tools, make deliveries or visit job sites, tell us and we will check whether your current policy would actually respond.
What is hired and non-owned auto coverage?
It covers vehicles your business uses but does not own, including rentals and employees driving their own cars on company business. If any of your staff ever run an errand for you in their own vehicle, this is the coverage that protects the business.
Are my tools covered if they are stolen out of the van?
Not automatically by the auto policy. Tools and equipment are usually scheduled under an inland marine or contractors equipment policy. Tell us roughly what you carry and we will make sure it is actually listed.
Can you cover a small fleet?
Yes. Once you are running several vehicles there are usually fleet-rated options that price better than individual policies, and the paperwork gets simpler. Tell us the vehicle count and we will quote both ways.
Do I need commercial auto for a vehicle with my business name on it?
Signage is a strong signal to a carrier that the vehicle is in business use, and it makes a personal-auto claim denial much more likely. If your logo is on the door, you should be on a commercial policy.

Make sure the policy would actually respond.

Tell us how the vehicle gets used and we will tell you straight whether you are covered.

No obligation. Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
